Filipinos are often surprised when asked, “Where did you study English?” We are surprised because we take our English skills for granted. We have countless Filipinos speaking English who have not been to America, Canada or UK.  How is it possible?  Going back to the history of Philippine Education, when our country became an American Colony, the colonizer has difficulty understanding the locals. In an effort by the American Government to communicate with the Filipinos, new schools were established with English as the medium of instructions. The military personnel were the first teachers initially teaching the 3R’s: Reading, ‘Riting (Writing) and ‘Rithmetic (Arithmetic).

In 1901, about 1000 more teachers arrived on board the USS Thomas. The teachers were called Thomasites. They were sent by the US government “to improve and to promote the education system” in the Philippines. More Filipino teachers were trained by the American Trainers on the English language, Literature, geography etc. The Filipino teachers were trained in English. The Filipino Teachers taught their students in English Language using English books at that time and up to the present time.

With some minor changes, The Philippine Educational System is patterned after the American Educational System.   In all schools, English is the medium of instruction from elementary, intermediate, high school and college. Our teacher uses English language to teach us. The books that we use in all levels are in English and in the classroom we are required to speak English to our classmates. Of course outside the classroom and at home we use our national language or our local dialect.

The traditional destinations to learn English is USA, Canada, England and Australia. Asian students sent to these countries become homesick and lonely. It is therefore essential to look at other destinations like The Philippines. Significantly, the Philippines is  the 3rd largest English speaking country, easily accessible with affordable travel fares, economical living standard, familiar cuisine and warm and friendly  people.
